A platform to support initiatives throughout the year.

Background

Women in Defence is an independent not-for-profit organisation founded in 2011 whose purpose is to accelerate gender equity in the defence sector. We collaborated with them to translate the new brand identity online, created by the PA design team. This involved completely rethinking how the website supports the many initiatives, with the most visible being the Women in Defence Awards held each year. We recommend finding out more about what they do.

Our role

We set out to create a canvas to clearly communicate what they are about, how people can get involved, and how they can be inspired by the stories and insights. We wanted to channel the passion that Angela Owen, the founder of the organisation, conveyed every time we discussed the website strategy.

We designed a flexible set of layout blocks to enable the team to build a wide range of pages and prepare for any future requirements. Weaving the blue and red colour scheme throughout the detailing of the site created a coherent and ownable visual identity. The deliberate use of white space within the design grid introduced pauses and space for reflection.

Supporting the awards

The yearly award process is an ongoing activity that requires a significant amount of organisation. We built the awards section of the site to adapt as this process unfolds, ensuring the team can update the website regularly throughout the year with minimum duplication of effort. Visitors to the site can follow updates and explore previous winners, nominations, the shortlist, and eventually the winners.

Multi-site

We also developed a second site for the Women in Defence Charter, managed by the same CMS, which utilises the same base layout blocks. You can read more about how much we love Craft CMS's multi-site capabilities here.
