Why Pepper Digital® is now a registered UK trademark

When we founded Pepper Digital back in 2005, we found that deciding on a name was harder than we expected. The ones we judged as the "good ones" were taken, even back then! We created a pool of potential names that we felt were friendly, with words that had a decent shape (designers for you!) and, crucially, we could register the domain name for!

We settled on ‘Pepper’, but we had two variations: Pepper Studios and Pepper Digital. We had shortlisted Studios as it felt broader, covering design and marketing. But we were, and are, first and foremost a digital agency, so we chose Pepper Digital. The timing was important: the web was still finding its feet, most brands were only just beginning to explore digital touchpoints, and an add-on to a brief, rather than the lead. And we all know how digital has kept growing in importance.

Twenty years on, we're still here. We still own pepperdigital.com and pepper.digital, and we've spent two decades doing exactly what we set out to do: designing and building things for the web. What we build has changed over the years, but the fun and creativity in problem-solving have not.

So why trademark it now?

The digital industry has grown enormously, and it’s now a much more crowded market. There are now agencies, studios and consultancies around the world trading under names that combine "Pepper" and "Digital" in some form, and that number is only growing. After twenty years of building a reputation under this name, it felt not just sensible but necessary to protect it properly in our core market.

The trademark was also timed to coincide with a refresh of our logo mark, and we're looking forward to revealing that alongside our new website, which is launching soon. Watch this space.

What the trademark covers

Our UK trademark (registration UK00004288265) covers the services we've always offered: graphic design, visual design, design consultancy, website design, website design and development, software design and development, and website design consultancy. You can view the official registration on the UK Intellectual Property Office website.

Still the original

The name has taken on greater meaning for us and for all the colleagues who have been part of the journey over the years. So in many ways, it’s more than a name.

So if you're looking for Pepper Digital, you've found us.

Thinking about trademarking your own brand?

If you're a client, partner or fellow agency and you've been exploring what it takes to trademark your name or logo, we'd be more than happy to share our experience and talk through how to approach it. Feel free to get in touch.

And one more thing...

The Pepper Digital name also led to our one-time cherished mascot: "Pepe". Pepe acted as our voice on social media and fronted our long-running Peptalks, sharing tips and wisdom with all.
